Liverpool told to offload Joel Matip this January

Joel Matip might struggle to remain fit this entire season.

Liverpool spent heavily in the summer window and addressed their struggling midfield by signing players like Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo.

But there was no addition in the defensive ranks even though Liverpool needed one left-footed centre-back this summer.

Klopp seems to prefer Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk as his first-choice central defensive partnership.

Club legend Graeme Souness believes the Reds don’t have enough firepower in their backline.

Matip will be deployed as a back-up even though he started two Premier League games already in the new campaign.

The Cameroon international has made 189 appearances in all competitions and has proved to be an excellent defender when he’s fit.

But a woeful run of luck with injuries has dampened his chances in the Liverpool XI and he should be offloaded next summer.

“I think the defence is more than good enough, the goalkeeper is more than good enough, but the blend in the midfield is not quite right,” Souness told the Daily Mirror.

“I’d like to see them get another central defender, Matip can’t keep himself fit for a long, hard Premier League year.”
