Former Liverpool star Mark Lawrenson feels that Liverpool should attempt to sign Chelsea loanee Reece James. James joined Wigan Athletic on loan last summer shortly after signing a four-year contract at Chelsea.

Wigan ended 18th in the Championship but James had a fine season with the Latics. The 19-year old was brilliant at the back for Wigan Athletic and also managed to score three goals in his 46 appearances throughout the season.

James’ performances saw him being named the Championship’s Team of the Season.

Mark Lawrenson feels that Liverpool should try to sign James which won’t be easy. The 61-year old said, “Recruitment is the biggest thing for any club now and I don’t think [Jurgen] Klopp will go mad in the transfer market this summer. But I tell you who I’ve seen – and I don’t think they could easily get him – the right-back at Wigan, on loan from Chelsea, Reece James. In that league he makes it look so ridiculously easy. I think he could make the step up. But of course he belongs to Chelsea at the moment.”

Even though Lawrenson feels Liverpool should sign Wigan, it’s very unlikely that Jurgen Klopp will be interested in another right-back as Liverpool already have a top-class right-back in Trent Alexander-Arnold. Liverpool also have Joe Gomez who can play in that position.
