Mario Gotze Opens Up On Why He Passed On Liverpool

Mario Gotze opened up on why a move to Liverpool never happened for him.

Upon leaving Bayern Munich back in 2016, Gotze had the opportunity to reunite with his former boss at Anfield.

The German World Cup winner decided to return to his former club, Borussia Dortmund as he felt he had better chances of winning silverware.

“You have to imagine it like this: Where did I come from?” the playmaker told 11 Freunde (via the Echo).

“From Munich, where I had reached the semi-finals in the Champions League three times with Bayern. I wanted to do that again!

“Liverpool finished eighth in the league. In the situation at the time, the likelihood of winning the Champions League with Borussia seemed much greater.”

The 28-year-old promising career eventually fizzled out in Germany due to health complications and he was let go last summer as a free agent. Now, he is trying to reignite his old form in the PSV Eindhoven ranks in Holland.

Liverpool were in transitional phase 5 years ago and Gotze could have been a quality addition. He became a star under Jurgen Klopp previously at Dortmund and could have enjoyed Premier League success if he took the flight to Merseyside.
