Jamie Redknapp urged Liverpool to keep hold of Georginio Wijnaldum.

Former Liverpool player Jamie Redknapp warned Liverpool of the shortcomings in the centre-back position and urged Liverpool to not let go of Georginio Wijnaldum this summer.

The Reds have been questioned due to their lack of activity in the transfer window with their only signing being left-back Kostas Tsimikas from Olympiakos.

Redknapp believes that the £10.9million sale of Lovren to Zenit St Petersburg would come back to haunt them if they don’t find a replacement soon.

He also suggests the newly crowned Premier League champions should not consider selling Wijnaldum to Barcelona due to his constant link up with Ronald Koeman.

There are very few midfielders in the world right now who can offer on the pitch like he does.

Redknapp told Sky Sports: “History suggests that you normally have to go out and buy one or two players to strengthen the squad. I think people have said in the last few weeks why haven’t Liverpool tried to get Thiago’ or get one or two players in, maybe a bit more strength in the centre-back area.

“They’ve lost Lovren and that leaves you quite short with [Joel] Matip, [Joe] Gomez and [Virgil] van Dijk. From there point of view, you just hope they don’t get any injures because if they were to get any injuries in that area they would be short.

“Especially when Gomez has had knee injuries and Matip can’t always play the full season. So you might think that could be an area where they could struggle.”
