The defender joined Italian side Cagliari

Ragnar Klavan has joined Cagliari from Liverpool in a £2 million move, two years after signing from Augsburg.

The defender struggled to be a regular for the Reds since joining them and played only an intermittent role last campaign. He managed to make 28 appearances in all competitions throughout the last term and did a decent job in the defense.

But after the arrival of Virgil Van Dijk from Southampton during the January transfer window, he fell down the pecking order.

The 32 year old was the club’s fifth choice defender after the Dutch International, Joel Matip, Dejan Lovren and Joe Gomez before the Premier League’s new season started. Even new signing Fabinho can also play as a centre-back if required.

It was expected that the player will be sold before the European transfer window closed and Klavan has revealed that Alisson Becker and Mohamed Salah convinced him to move to Serie A. Both of them has played for Roma before moving to England.

“I had offers from several teams, including in other countries, but Cagliari really wanted me,” he explained to Sky Sport Italia as quoted by Goal.

“Darijo Srna advised me to come here, as I talked to him via Dejan Lovren. Other Liverpool teammates like Alisson, Salah and Lucas Leiva all spoke highly of Serie A.

“I’m certain we’ll do great things here and I am really fired up. The city is wonderful and so are the fans, I can’t wait to get started.”
