The former United defender believes Liverpool could have done better to stop Karim Benzema’s goal.

Real Madrid Karim Benzema scored the only goal last night to seal their place in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League.

Liverpool were already trailing 5-2 from the first-leg tie before going to the Santiago Bernabeu for the second-leg clash.

The Reds had a faint hope of having a comeback but it was eventually killed with Benzema’s strike in the 78th minute.

Rio Ferdinand has blamed Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate were at fault for Benzema’s goal.

Ferdinand told BT Sport: ‘As the ball goes into the centre forward, Trent Alexander-Arnold has got to be thinking defensively. “My two centre halves are in trouble, there could be a ball coming through here at some point, let me at least get myself back in to cover my defenders”. That’s got to be the first and only thought in this phase of play.

‘That is a world class attacking player who you can’t take your eyes off for one second.

‘How has he got separated within two seconds to get to five yards and get a chance on goal?’
