Steven Gerrard says Real Madrid wanted him

Steven Gerrard admits that Real Madrid were interested in him back in 2010.

He revealed that he wanted to play under Jose Mourinho at that time – when he was linked with Real Madrid.

“I think if all the Chelsea stuff didn’t happen and Mourinho, when he came for me around 2010 (2009), maybe you look back and think: imagine playing for Madrid for a year or two,” Gerrard said.

“Imagine going and playing for Mourinho in the Champions League – that would’ve been an unbelievable experience. Of course it would. But it didn’t happen.

“Basically, Madrid wanted me to cause a war at Liverpool to get out. That was the only way that could’ve happened.”

Jose Mourinho had also admitted that Gerrard had rejected his offers thrice, but he respected Gerrard’s decision.

“But speaking about Liverpool and speaking about honouring the champions, this is my time to honour a champion. It is my time to honour Steve Gerrard.

“Steven Gerrard is for sure one of my favourite enemies – an enemy with all the good feeling I can express with that word in football.

“For sure, in England he is my dear enemy. For sure, he is the one that made me a better manager. To stop him or try and stop him has been very, very difficult,” he said.
