Tallest Liverpool Players
Height is no longer as appreciated in world football as it was in the olden days. With the game becoming more technical, a level of skill in all aspects will give him more notoriety than his height.
However, it is still a very important factor for defenders and goalkeepers. A player’s length gives him/her a significant advantage in aerial duels. Teams usually prefer tall centre-backs and goalkeepers in order to stop the opposing team from scoring. Traditional strikers who like to play as a sole target man up front is highly dependent on his height.
Of course, there are exceptions in midfield like Manchester United’s Paul Pogba who towers over all at 6 feet 3 inches and then proceeds to dribble past you like Andres Iniesta. Now that’s some skill!

Nathaniel Philips is Liverpool’s centre back, who has been with the club since 2016. By 2018, he graduated from the Liverpool academy and started to train with the first team and hasn’t looked back since. So far this season, he hasn’t featured in any of the games but is hoping to make more appearances!
4. Adrian – Tallest Liverpool Players
Adrian has been a lovely surprise for Liverpool fans in the 2020/21 season so far. A goalkeeper without a contract a short while back has quickly picked up a lot of attention at Anfield.
The Spaniard was a free agent after being released from West Ham United this season. He played only 5 games in his final season for the Hammers after his starting spot got taken over by Łukasz Fabiański. Jurgen Klopp handed him a chance at the big times and Adrian took no time to impress.
After Alisson went down to a hamstring injury owing to the sheer volume of games played in the past campaign, Adrian has filled in as an able backup. Liverpool cannot be expected to play out of the back as successfully with the 32-year-old but he has been a dependable final line of their defence, making ridiculous saves to keep the Reds in the win column.
3. Alisson Becker – Tallest Liverpool Players
Just like Van Dijk, many had raised questions over Alisson’s price tag of £65m. He became the world’s most expensive goalkeeper when he switched over from AS Roma in the summer of 2018 but only for a short while. Chelsea’s signing of Kepa Arrizibalaga for over £70m broke that record a few weeks later.
Nevertheless, both Alisson and Van Dijk’s transfer roughly totalled up to the transfer fee Liverpool received for Philippe Coutinho. The two defensive additions only took a season to prove why Jurgen Klopp was so adamant on signing them. Alisson won the Golden Glove in the 2018/19 Champions League, Premier League and in the Copa America – the only ever goalkeeper to win three in a single season. He stands at 6 feet 3 inches tall (1.91m).
2. Virgil Van Dijk – Tallest Liverpool Players
Virgil van Dijk originally cost Liverpool £75m. So after 18 months, a Champions League trophy and a UEFA Player Of The Year award, he surely ought to be worth much more, right?
The Dutchman is hailed as the world’s best defender and there isn’t a shred of doubt about that. Up until the 3-1 win against Arsenal in September 2019, Virgil van Dijk went an incredible 17 months without being dribbled past by an opposition player. It was Nicolas Pepe, who caught the Dutchman on the turn and sped past him to break the record.
Now, that might be a silly statistic but it should give you a glimpse of just how good van Dijk truly is. The man has almost singlehandedly solidified Liverpool’s defence after signing for them in January 2018. He is 6 feet 4 inches tall (1.93 m).
1. Joel Matip – Tallest Liverpool Players
Joel Matip might not be as celebrated as much as his centre-half partner, Virgil van Dijk but the Cameroon international is definitely one of top defenders in the Premier League. Standing at 6 feet 5 inches, the former Schalke man towers over opposition players in the box and often comes out on top in most aerial duels.
Matip has been with Liverpool since February 2016, and was signed by the Reds from Schalke. The 6’5” giant scored his debut goal for Liverpool during the 4-2 Crystal Palace win at Selhurst Park.
