Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk has played down what appeared to Jurgen Klopp’s angry response towards him after Napoli scored their first goal.

The Champions League winners have had a disastrous pre-season so far as they have not won any of their last 4 matches. Liverpool’s most recent match in Ediburgh ended in a 3-0 defeat to Napoli.

Despite fielding a backline comprising of Van Dijk, Matip, Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold, Liverpool were unable to defend against Napoli’s counter-attack.

After Lorenzo Insigne gave Napoli the lead, Jurgen Klopp was fumed at Liverpool and he seemed to be quite angry at van Dijk in particular as the two shared a few words from a distance.

However, van Dijk has made it clear that whatever happened between him and Klopp was no big deal. When asked about the incident with Klopp, the Netherlands captain said as quoted by the Express: “Just things… between me and him. It’s not necessary to say. I think everyone has to communicate with each other. Sometimes you have to tell someone the truth, that’s how it is.”

Jurgen Klopp and his team are currently training in Evian and they will next travel to Geneva where they’ll play their final pre-season friendly against Lyon.

Liverpool have all their key players back in the squad except for Sadio Mane who will return to the squad a day after Liverpool’s Community Shield encounter against Manchester City.

Given that now Liverpool have Salah, Firmino and most importantly, Alisson back, they can be expected to give Pep Guardiola’s team a tough fight on Sunday.
