Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk said that it wasn’t a clever decision to foul Leroy Sane in the penalty area during yesterday’s match against Manchester City.

Van Dijk’s foul on Sane in the 86th minute saw City winning a penalty and a golden opportunity to win the match.

Riyad Mahrez took the penalty but it went over the crossbar. This was a major relief for Liverpool and Virgil van Dijk in particular. The match ended in a 0-0 draw.

The match was not much of an attacking contest as both Liverpool and City each had only two shots on target.

Virgil an Dijk said that Liverpool were lucky not to concede the goal from the penalty. He said, “It is not smart to dive in there. It was a penalty and it shouldn’t have happened, but I’m very happy we didn’t concede. I watched it because I wanted to get the rebound if he missed it.

They did well, as did we, up until the penalty moment. We were unlucky not to score, and lucky not to concede as well, so I think we canceled each other out. It was a tough game against the champions and I’m happy we kept the clean sheet. We wanted to bounce back from our defeat to Napoli and I think we did that.”

As a result of the draw, Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea all have 20 points from their 8 games. Liverpool are third in the table due to a relatively inferior goal-difference while City lead the table for now. Liverpool’s next match is against Huddersfield Town on October 20.
