Liverpool was founded on June 3, 1892 after the President of Everton John Houlding had an argument with the clubs’s Board of Directors regarding the club’s tenancy of Anfield. This led to Everton shifting their base to Goodison Park and Houlding founded Liverpool.

After the club’s foundation, John Houlding aimed to make Liverpool a member of the First Division. However, the First Division rejected his application and Liverpool eventually participated in the Lancashire League for the 1892/93 season.

The club’s first ever match was a pre-season friendly against Rotherham City at Anfield.

Managed by William Barclay, Liverpool was captained by Andrew Hannah against Rotherham City.

Liverpool opened the scoring thanks to John Miller who became the first ever goal in Liverpool’s history. Andrew Kelvin and Joe McQue put Liverpool 3-0 up before Thomas Wyllie’s brace put Liverpool 5-0 up. Wyllie thus became the first Liverpool player to score two goals in a match.

John Miller added his second for Liverpool’s 6th before Wyllie completed his hat-trick, thus becoming the first Reds player to score a hat-trick. Rotherham did manage to pull one back courtesy of Charlie Leatherbarrow.

The 1892/93 was Liverpool’s first season. After failing to gain participation in the First Division, Liverpool decided to participate in the now-defunct Lancashire League.

Their first ever match in the Lancashire League was Liverpool’s first ever official match. Their opponents were Lancashire-based Higher Walton and the date was September 3.

The venue was Anfield and the crowd was a meagre 300 people.

Liverpool had two changes to the side that beat Rotherham City with Percy Pearson and John Cameron coming in for James Kelso and John Miller.

It took just 15 minutes for Liverpool to open the scoring thanks to a shot from Jock Smith who became the first Liverpool player to score in an official match.

James McBride scored Liverpool’s second from a corner taken by Pearson. James McVean added Liverpool’s third before John Cameron scored their fourth from the rebound of Andrew Kelvin’s shot. Joe McQue added the final goal of the first half as Liverpool led 5-0 at the interval.

In the second half, Cameron added a second to make it 6-0 for Liverpool. He thus became the first Liverpool player to score more than one goal in an official match. McQue scored Liverpool’s 7th before Jock Smith who scored Liverpool’s first goal of the match, scored their last.

At the end of the final whistle, Liverpool’s first official game ended in a 8-0 win for the Reds. Liverpool went on to beat Higher Walton in the away leg as well, drubbing them 5-0. In this match, John Miller became the first Liverpool player to score a hat-trick.

Liverpool even won the Lancashire League, amassing 66 points .

Liverpool’s first ever FA Cup match was against Nantwich Town who currently play in the 7th tier at London Road on October 15, 1892.

After more than an hour of goalless play, Thomas Wyllie opened the scoring in the 70th minute, thus becoming the first Liverpool scorer in the FA Cup. John Miller later scored a hat-trick and Liverpool win 4-0.

The Reds won the following match by beating Newtown 9-0 but lost in the third qualifying round to Northwich Victoria who eventually reached the quarter-finals of the tournament.

Liverpool’s first ever EFL Cup match was against Luton Town on October 19, 1960.

23-year old Tommy Leisham opened the scoring for Liverpool in the 25th minute, thus becoming Liverpool’s first scorer in EFL Cup history. The match ended in a 1-1 draw after David Brogan netted the equaliser for Luton Town.

Liverpool won the replay 5-2 to commence to the third round where they lost 1-2 to Southampton who eventually reached the 5th round.

Liverpool’s first appearance in the European Cup was in the 1964/65 season. The Reds were up against Icelandic club KR in the preliminary round.

Just three minutes into the game, Gordon Wallace opened the scoring for Liverpool thus becoming the first Liverpool scorer in a European game. The Reds eventuallywon the first leg 5-0. They won the second leg at Anfield 6-1 to move on the the first round.
